Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.11

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for those new hit and crit stats, again. Because Blizzard broke them in a patch.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

Yeah, I removed those a couple versions ago when you're on 4.3 realms, and entirely in the latest version since 4.3 is live. This information is available on your character sheet now, even without Pawn. The "epic gear level" number isn't really relevant anymore I think because Blizzard seems to treat item rarity different than they used to. (In Wrath, blue 200s and epic 200s both existed, and the epic 200s were definitely stronger, and contributed more toward vehicle scaling in Wintergrasp and Ulduar. In Cataclysm there are no epic 346s or blue 353s; there seems to just be the one item level number. It's nicer and simpler.)

Current is as the item currently is (after gems, enchantments, enchantment-like things such as armor kits, and reforging). Base is after the item has been modified using the suggestions from Pawn's advisors (so using the "proper" gems and reforging, but without any enchantments).

Base is the one you want to pay attention to most of the time at endgame; the current value is only useful in a few specific cases, like to determine whether you want to upgrade to a new item right away before it's gemmed or reforged.

"show both current and base values"

so base would be without gems or enchantments, right?

i just noticed that gear with armor kits applied don't get recognized as having a base level that is less because of the armor kit.

love the addon! i have been using it for so long, thank you for all your hard work!

Yeah, someone (maybe you :-P) suggested Ask Mr. Robot scales too. I should really get around to checking them out. Maybe during one of the graveyard runs in my first Firelands fail-raid...

One thing I could easily do is make the window that pops up when you click Copy on a scale start with the existing scale's name pre-selected. That would make it easier to make a bunch of similar scales.

The trick I use is to number my scales or use something like P-D1 (paladin dps scale 1). I can manually re-order them by changing that value.

Still loving the mod VgerAN!

As a suggestion for the scales, could you consider importing the askmrrobot.com scales? I've found those scales are much better than the default ones and tend to be updated much quicker (for many classes/specs at least).

On a related note, I've found the best way to handle stat caps is to just create several scales for the caps. For example, You want to be exactly at 8% hit and 26 expertise. After reforging and gemming, you can get to that exact point, but when evaluating gear you really need to make an informed decision on both sides. The tool tips get long, but I have found adding multiple scales to be ideal. For example, my paladin has the following scales (from the askmrrobot scale):

( Pawn: v1: "P-D1 4.1 Hit<8 Exp<6.5 ": HitRating=1.55, ExpertiseRating=1.30, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )
( Pawn: v1: "P-D1 4.1 Hit<8 Exp>6.5 ": HitRating=1.55, ExpertiseRating=0.00, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )
( Pawn: v1: "P-D2 4.1 Hit<17 Exp<6.5 ": HitRating=0.22, ExpertiseRating=1.30, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )
( Pawn: v1: "P-D3 4.1 Hit>17 Exp<6.5 ": HitRating=0.00, ExpertiseRating=1.30, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )
( Pawn: v1: "P-D4 4.1 Hit<17 Exp>6.5 ": HitRating=0.22, ExpertiseRating=0.00, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )
( Pawn: v1: "P-D5 4.1 Hit>17 Exp>6.5 ": HitRating=0.00, ExpertiseRating=0.00, MasteryRating=1.13, Strength=2.33, Ap=1, CritRating=0.98, HasteRating=0.79, Speed=18.848, Dps=9 )

It would be awesome to auto-generate these scales (I know it is an often requested feature, but maybe a quick way would be to just have quick clone button similar to copy that would append the various levels cap<x text).

Yeah, you'll either need to disable skinning, or if you don't care about Pawn's suggestions, its feelings will not be hurt if you uncheck the option for the socketing advisor on Pawn's options tab.

I think this may be a skinning issue with ElvUI, but I'm not entirely sure.. thought I would ask though just in case.

The Pawn advice window covers up the socketing button. Is there anything you can do, or do I need to just disable the skinning for this window? If I need to disable the skinning for that window, it's cool as I can live with it.

Is it possible to sort default (Wowhead) scales? I'm mainly a shadow and want it above the healing-weight (discipline).

(I don't want to copy them because then they won't update with Pawn update, and default ones can't be renamed)

Caps in stat weights are a common request, and a long-term goal. There are other features that I need to build before I can make that happen.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but I'm getting reforge advisories for stats that are already capped at my level. Is it possible for introduce capped weights for stats into the add-on?

Hi VGerAN, I think you may have hit the nail on the head, my guess is that any gear with +int and +spirit that is shown as an upgrade is for the resto scale since I haven't turned any scales off as yet, will give your suggestion a try.

TBH, most of the theorycraft stuff I see on EJ, shadowpanther and the like just confuses me at the moment having not spent much time thinking about it.

But thanks again and well done on what I think will soon become one of my most important addons.

It's definitely geared toward level 85 players, but I've used it while leveling and it's worked out pretty well for me. In particular the stat weights given are definitely for level 85 players.

One thing that comes to mind is that Pawn will track upgrades for all of your scales that are active. If you have all of the bear, kitty, resto, and balance scales visible, it'll show you upgrades for all of those sets. Maybe you're seeing upgrades for your balance and resto sets while you're questing as feral? If you're not actively maintaining gear for those sets, you can turn them off and you won't see upgrades for them anymore. Open up the Pawn window and shift-click on the scales you don't care about anymore. (You can always find them in the list and shift-click them again to get them back.)

Does that help?
