a rar file is almost exactly like a zip file. If i recall correctly a rar file is just compressed more. You can get winrar to open that for you. Thats what I use.
Its not free after 40 days, but you can use 7-zip which is totally free.

Sounds like you accidentally tried to open a rar file with adobe at some point.

Try rightclicking the file and choose "open with", then pick whatever program you have that can unpack a rar file. That should hopefully solve your problem.

Considering Windows comes with .zip utilities, I -still- don't understand why WoWI didn't stick with .zip only.

If using Windows you might wanna try shift+rightclicking the icon if you do not see "open with" when you leave off the shift.

Not everyone uses Windows, and RAR files have a far superior compression algorithm; some people can't fit everything into a ZIP file.

That confused me. There's no arbitrary limit to how much can be put in a zip file. Nor is there with a rar file.

Elaborate for me, so i can stop being confused?

You are correct, but there is an upload size limit on wowi, however. ;)
