Carbonite 5.04 [FAN UPDATE] Released
 

Because the authors have verified they are releasing there own shortly, I have removed mine to avoid conflicts of multiple versions.

FAQ!

Q: Why don't you upload it to wowinterface / curse / wowace?
A: Carbonite is not like most other wow addons, it includes a license that forbid us from making changes to it. I'm banking on the authors being glad someone was keeping their work alive while they work on the real update, or are busy with real life... so i'm risking offering it for download from my personal server. I cannot and will not risk any legal action against MMOUI or Curse if the original authors take this fan update badly and do persue legal roads over it.

Q: Can I donate to you for your efforts?
A: I would prefer donations went to the original creators, the last thing I want is for them to say I did this update to steal the money they could generate. So if you feel the need to donate, do it to them. If you want to donate to both them and myself, I can accept that and just send me a message saying so.

Q: Why not rewrite everything instead of waiting around to find out what the authors think of this.. hell you can even kickstarter it!
A: I love carbonite, I've used it for years and updated it because I didn't want to lose all the features it has. If the original authors are silently working on an update, i would rather use it then start my own especially since they know the addon inside and out and can fix things I can't even dream of. If down the road it looks like starting over is the best option, that might be possible and definately has enough interest by both other programmers and users.

Q: Why the two quest database options?
A: Blizzard instanced all start area's, no matter gnome, elf or troll. This has messed up the internal quest database as it tries pointing you to the wrong places. If your working on one of those quests, you can switch POI systems and let blizzard guide you to the objectives.

Q: Why not update the quest database instead of the option?
A: Decrypting how carbonites quest database works / stores it's information was more then I was willing to do as a fan update without the authors permission.

Q: I tried zooming in on pandaria, and the maps don't line up WHY NOT??? [trollface]
A: While I have done a lot of work getting the 3 pandaria maps in, only 2 of them are scaled / lined up... I still need to do the third

Q: Does this mean the project is abandoned?
A: No. We have no idea what is going on, the authors could be working on there own version 5 of carbonite and just to busy to let us know. That is actually what we all hope is the case, but I know I can't live without carbonite even one day and neither can most of you, so I did the fan update to keep us going.

I've been going into withdrawl since Tuesday. I can't even stand to open my map so I've just been bumming around Org all depressed, dreaming of the day my Carbonite will return. Ok not really, but THANK YOU! I can't function without this addon! :D

Ok... i'll admit, i'm shocked at just how many people use this.... since I uploaded the update 10 hours ago, 1373 downloads. You guys really do love your carbonite.

Rythal....you are truly gifted!!!!! I just downloaded and implemented you Fan Update for Carbonite 5.0.4.....I am in awe. Wonderful is all I can say. So far it works beautifully. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I will be visiting the developers site as well and donating in your name.

Update: I just made a donation to the devs but did not see any place for a notation so I am posting it here....I donated because of Rythal's Fan Update!!!!....Rythal if you have a link I will gladly donate to you as well.

IMO you should be putting a direct link to your paypal in the thread. It would be a shame if the donation money ended up going to the original devs and not you instead. Not to mention, im sure that it would help support your server costs.

I just wanted to express my thanks for your hard work on the Fan Update. It is people like you that continues to restore my faith in the WoW-Addon community. :)

I seem to be having one small issue that I can't figure out since your 003 update.

My Carbonite Menu button seems to be missing most of the time now. If I reload my interface, sometimes it comes back, and sometimes when it is back (and I preform a reload) it vanishes again.

I have tried wiping out Carbonite completely, and re-downloading and applying the addon.

I also use nUI and Leatrix in conjunction with Carbonite. Up until today, they have played nicely together, and in reality they still do with the exception of the menu button for Leatrix also going missing on the Carbonite Menu Bar.

I realize that these are fairly small issues, and in no way degrade my game play experience, I just thought I'd bring it up incase you had some thoughts.

Seems to me they have been around quite a bit lately. I think it's pretty lame that they can't take 5 seconds to post "Hey, we're still here and working on the update" versus letting everyone sit here wondering what they are up to and all the while still taking peoples money for supporting a product they aren't properly supporting.

You know how many times I have heard that line... about every major update and every expansion since they were no longer able to charge... Yes, it would be nice if they updated a quick note to us. But WoW and Carbonite are not their priorities anymore, they have other business that they attend to that generate them a more steady income (I'm sure they get about 90% of their donations on expansion releases and major updates). As for "still taking peoples money for supporting a product" since Blizzard did away with that years ago, they have never taken money for supporting Carbonite (this would constitute a paid version of an add on and therefore violate ToS). They leave it up and running and people donate to them if and when they want to. Eventually, after a few WoW expansions (lvl 110 unless someone creates another version) with no updates, people will eventually leave and forget about Carbonite.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you so much for doing this. Like many others, I've been at a loss the last couple of days without my Carbonite. If I come across any bugs, I'll be sure to let you know.

Sorry guys, but I see it like this. If you are going to solicit money from people then people will have a higher expectation of the level of service you should provide.
If it were just a small amount then ya, you're probably right that it shouldn't be a big deal, but...

Lets look at it this way.

Curse = nearly 1.8 MILLION downloads
Let's be conservative and say they have had 1 Million downloads here and another million on carboniteaddon.com
That's nearly 4 Million downloads
Let's say just 1% of those donated at their minimum of $5.
That's nearly $200,000 they possible made.

So, yea. I'm going to hold them to a higher standard than the guy offering true freebies.
And they could (and should) easily log in and post a message to the probably minimum 10's of thousands of players out there that rely on their product.

I have been using Carbonite since I first started WoW and I was already expecting it to be broken when 5.0.4 hit, so thank you Ry for the fan update, I had the damn stock maps and quest tracker :mad:

Carbonite and Guppet
 

Since patch 5.04 the Guppet mini-map icon isn't being moved by Carbonite into its button bag like it used to. It's being left on the screen where the mini-map used to be. Not a really big deal but thought I'd mention as something to be placed (hopefully) on your 'To Do' list.

I gotta say, it's really awesome you've taken the time to do all this work on Carbonite!!!

I have not experienced any of the reported issues and I have been testing all of them. Using 50403.
Although I have only enabled Carbonite (Not: Items, Nodes, or Transfer)

I have drilled down (c:users\public\games\wow\interface\addons) and replaced on extract. Seems to be no change.
On the mini car map, guide wont open
No carbonite quest list
the "goto" doesnt work

There's one glaring fault with your math: Carbonite, whether from carboniteaddon.com or wowinterface.com, gets downloaded from the exact same page: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info12965-Carbonite.html. The numbers you're estimating won't add up.

Go in ur Carbonite / delete the 2 ( Carbonite.lua and carbonite.toc ) and do the new one in this data :) then it should be work :D

easiest way to know, is while your playing the game... is it in english? town names, quests, maps

one more thing will you be able to update the carbonite nodes and transfer files there still out of date no big thing just curious

We don't know yet, I don't want to say yes and make commitments I can't keep until we find out what is happening with the addon and if I'm going to be allowed to continue working on it or if the developers are going to be doing there own update.

well imo opinon the devs should have had an update ready by the release of patch 5.0 every other add on i had had them with in 24hrs of the patch not good when a fan updates it for them imo your one hell of a guy and deserve alot of props for what you did for us loyal fans of carbonite

Normally i'd agree, because usually non-abandoned addons are patched and ready to go within 24 hours or so, but having worked on carbonite to do the fan update I know just what a huge task it is to add new stuff into it, especially an entire new continent. And the carbonite devs have never been timely with patches like that, it's always been a couple days before we saw a patch from them, so i'm half expecting to see something from them any day now.

Maybe i'm to optomistic, but hopefully we'll hear from them soon.

it seems kinda funny to me, since i'm the one who wrote the fan-update, but I also seem to be haavok & faatals biggest cheerleader, so sure they havn't abandoned us :P lol

I would just like to say thank you for fixing for 5.0.4... I just have 1 question, everything is working fine but when I go into a BG the map doesn't show up like it used to...I was just wondering if it is something I am doing wrong or is it just because of the patch...thanks again

The maps were moved, right click the map and select follow me that'll reorient it properly for that BG.

Are you downloading from the official download page or did you bookmark his download link when he posted earlier.

If the former then that would be why as this is a fan update he is doing and thus he is unable to update the download page on this site. Contact him by pm and i am sure he will let you know where you need to download it from until the official devs update it.

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but It's been happening for me on both of my computers.
And it might only be these 2 zones. It might even be the other addon(Though it worked fine with previous versions of Carbonite)

With Elwynn Forest and Westfall, my waypoint has me going wayy off where I should be going. It might do it with other places aswell, but I haven't gotten there yet. I know it works fine in the Outlands though

The other addon I'm using(The one that's giving me the location for the waypoints) is <snip>

I love the fact that it works again (at least as far as i have seen..) I do have one problem, that you may have said how to fix, but i missed it if you did.

The carbonite mini map... If i mouse over it, then it shows all the detail, and is nice and clear... but as SOON as i move the mouse away, the map goes back to the 'area' map (showing the location name, and hiding all the detail...

What i mean is that mouse off, its almost like looking at the continent map... you have the areas showing... mose over the minimap, and it changes to the individual zone map...

Is there a way to stop the transition, and have iot keep itself as zone map until zoomed out?

check your map transparency settings, more specifically overlay in that menu if I remember right (at work so can't check lol). It's most likely setf for / going to 0 when you mouse out.

Like i said, you da man..... the fade out transparency was at 0.2 - so ya.. changed that up to 0.8 and everything is perfect :)

I'm not sure if this is a bug or just something I never really had to change before with Carbonite but I noticed that when I use 'M' to make carb's map full screen and then zoom out to see the whole continent I can no longer mouse over other zones and see the zone map. I can zoom in and see the google detail stuff but not the zone map. I'm not sure if I am describing the problem accurately or if I have my settings messed up or what but I thought I'd put this out there.

Also, thank you so much for making this fan update and I sincerely hope the devs are not mad at you for saving the rest of us Carb fans from the misery of a broken carbonite. :cool:

are you using any other addons that do anything with maps? I had this problem during testing because another addon was grabbing map control, even tho carbonite still showed it's map, I couldn't hover over and see the overlay.

The fix was usually /reloadUI to kickstart it working again, until I figured out which addon was causing it to stop.

I know you can be sure enough about anything ...
But there is not executable in that only lua file ...
and that file executed in wow and taht is separated from computer or his resources ...
i know carbonite send information on custom channel for example about new version and ets.
but addon cant to get to your password or any other information ...
i know that u can copy text via clipboard from and to wow for example your guild website ....
But there is no reason to be paranoid,i install a lot programs and only solution is good antivirus and firevall ...
If i was virus writer i would write key simple keyloggerwhich was send your psasword via internet not lua

P.S. If you are still afraid about hacking your account buy authenticator from blizzard

Rythal Should be able to upload it to other place's and here as a fan update (at lease)

One of site admin should try get a hold of dev's if possible. if they don't get back to them ( they been active on site as lease without post any info at all) .

I think by wow new rule's forbid them to to even do this ( not sure myself)
and by blizzards new rule the lua should be easy to read and understand ( again not sure )

they haven't updated the webpage, but it still remains they retain all rights to the addon just by creating it. In fact, it's been less then a year since they last updated it.

As for the concern there is a virus in it, if you are concerned then don't install it.. it's that simple. I'm not holding hands, or forcing anyone to use it, I updated it for myself because I couldn't live without it and thought i'd be kind and share it, but ask yourself this ... if there was a virus in it, do you really think the link would of lasted all week here on the forums, someone would of discovered it and reported it.

Yes I could play bait and switch, but there are just lua files inside the zip, and it will remain that way. As far as I know there is no way for an lua script run inside of WoW to get your personal information, if this is wrong i'd love to be shown or told otherwise, because it would be the end of me trusting / using any addon... i'm very paranoid about security.

As for people trying to get in contact with the developers, so we can get this cleared up... various people who have better contact details then forum messages are trying, it just hasn't worked yet.

and as an addendum, I never intended the link to be anywhere else besides wowinterface... but this is the digital age, and keeping something in one place is impossible... if you google search the link it's everywhere now. (any my poor server & 1M upload bandwidth is screaming in agony lol). virtxchange is a computer sitting right beside me, that normally does nothing but handle my tv recording. If there was anything malicious about it, someone, somewhere would of caught it. I may be a decent programmer, but i'm not that good ><.

And no, it's not the real carbonite.. well.. it is, it just wasn't an update by the official developers. it still uses all of the things that the official carbonite addon installed.
