Carbonite 5.041 Source Released

Haavok and I have decided we will not be updating Carbonite any longer. We no longer play WoW and just have too many others things going on in life to devote any time to it.

We have decided to release the full Carbonite addon code under GPL license. I have stripped out or commented out various debugging lines in the code that were normally stripped out in our build process. The files should run as is, but I did not test my changes.

The source zip file is available here:
www.carboniteaddon.com/download

Thanks,
faatal

Cairenn 09-30-12 10:46 PM

Thank you both for all you have done for the community over the years, Faatal and Haavok, you will be missed. Safe travels, hopefully we'll see you somewhere down the road in some other game.

carboniteaddon 09-30-12 10:56 PM

Thanks Cairenn, you guys run a classy operation and have always been supportive.

Take care,
faatal

Rythal 09-30-12 11:17 PM

While I am sorry to hear it as you guys have done amazing things and worked real magic with your addon, I do want to thank you for releasing it and allowing us to carry on with it.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Kathan 09-30-12 11:54 PM

Thank you for doing this. I know how life can 'get in the way' of doing the things you'd like to do, and it can be rough. Just know that you've made thousands, if not millions of people inadvertently happy for releasing this to the general public so that it can be updated and improved upon.

Best luck to the both of you in future endeavors. :D

tinyu 10-01-12 12:00 AM

best of luck to you both Haavok and Fataal and Goodluck to you Rythal.

schizophrena 10-01-12 12:01 AM

Thanks for all that you have done for us, the players and users of your great addon.

Please do stop by sometime and say hello - I will surely miss you all and hope that someone (like Rythal) will take it over and add to it to continue to make it as great as your dream for Carbonite is/was.

Enjoy your work and family time!

Choonstertwo 10-01-12 12:08 AM

I love this AddOn, thank you for releasing it as open source! (And thanks to Rythal for continuing to update it)

mondoz 10-01-12 12:28 AM

Thanks for everything!

Coote 10-01-12 01:10 AM

This was the last thing I expected to happen. I figured pigs would be able to fly before this (mmmmm pork chicken wings /drool). I may not have been a Carbonite user, but still, thank you Faatal, and Haavok for the years you had spent on this, and even more-so for GPLing it in the end.

Website/WoWI

My only other question would then be are you passing on the website/WoWI page etc? It seems obvious who is going to be spearheading the revitalization and being able to do things like merge the topics form the supporter only forums or post the latest release to carboniteaddon.com would make Rythal's and the communities lives easier.

Kudos to all the great work to now and thanks for letting it live on legally!

If you have seen that Carbonite has already been updated and Rythal is one of the ones who can update (with Fataal and Havok). So I believe this part has been done, at least for the updating.

As for the supporters forum, there hasn't been anything really worthwhile in there for quite some time, we all pretty much use the general forums anyways.

The update on this site is the buggy one the devs released before deciding to pass on the torch. Rythals modded cata version is posted on his own site and I didnt see one here. carboniteaddon.com has been updated to remove the donate link, but still has the previously mentioned release. You could be right tho, I'm hoping they gave Rythal admin control on either or both.

And good to know I haven't missed anything in the other forum LOLOL

I have already transferred ownership of the project, along with moderation abilities in these Carbonite forums, to Rythal.

Whether Haavok and Faatal will pass along the site as well, however, is a real toss up. Unless Rythal, or some group of individuals, offers to pony up the costs for it, though, I don't much imagine they would. My guess is that it'll just poof after a time. Don't quote me on that, though. Imo, it isn't really necessary, the files are here, the forums are in place, it's easy for Rythal to open up his portal and use that for all of the necessary documentation, news reports, etc. But both of those things aren't up to me. Time will tell I guess.

Either way, WoWI will continue to offer Rythal & the Carbonite community every assistance we can. :)

Xarl 10-01-12 02:51 AM

Thank you Faatal and Haavok for releasing the Code and i wish you both the best.

And big Thank you as well to Rythal for picking this up :)

Thank you so much, thanks to that i already made a ptBR version fully working

SnufferBuffer 10-01-12 06:14 AM

Ok I have just today on 10/1/2012 downloaded the two files of:

Carbonite-50501.zip & CarboniteGPL_5041.zip

I am not a guru at this stuff but I have looked in the files and see some changes and newer dates on files and all but wanted to make sure before I do anything.

Now mind you I right now have installed and working on my system this file I downloaded a few weeks ago of : Carbonite-5.041.zip

Now my question is this, Which of the two files mentioned at the top of this post is the one that I want to install on my system to get the latest updates, and has there been announced a new location where we can get any updates of the Carbonite Add On from now, (10/1/2012), on?

Thanks for any INPUT and advice you gents may have.

Snuffy . . . . ;)

Yes, thanks for everything guys!

It looks like they took down the donations link, but if anyone else feels that this would be a good time to drop one last tip in the jar, the last Paypal address I had for Carbon-Based Creations was <[email protected]>.

Download the one here from WoWI, it's the entire package with my fixes using the old code, the GPL one we don't know if it runs or not and is what i'll be using going forward.

HerrDrache 10-01-12 08:01 AM

Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you for creating Carbonite and maintaining it over the years. It has made my wow-time even more enjoyable.
And now that you're busy in real life (while the rest of us are still hopelessly addicted), thank you for GPL-ing the code and giving Rythal access to whatever he needs.
Last, but not least, of course, thank you Rythal for stepping in and taking over.

You all are an exceptional bunch of people - best of luck in all that you do!

lerb 10-01-12 08:05 AM

Be proud Faatal and Haavok, as everyone can see you've created one of the most loved World of Warcraft addons ever, that's a beautiful thing. You're addon-heroes in my eyes, even though I haven't been using the addon as much as others. Hopefully you feel good about this decision of letting it go and see where it heads from now on, this beast of an addon you've created.

Good luck and safe travels!

jeffy162 10-01-12 08:20 AM

I would like to add my thanks to fataal and Haavok (and the unnamed third original developer) for all they have done to help us enjoy playing World of Warcraft.

Hey, go live your lives. Enjoy life while you can, my friends, because it is entirely too short not to.

Xcari 10-01-12 10:02 AM

Thank you so much. Our family has used and supported Carbonite since the days it was a paid add on. Faatal and Haavok, thank you for allowing it be free/donation supported over these subsequent years. And thank you for releasing the project to Rythal, so it will continue to flourish. Time changes many things in our lives, and our family wishes both of you and your families and loved ones health and happiness, and the good memories of a job well done!

Zarggg 10-01-12 10:14 AM

Haavok & Faatal:

I know I don't say much, but used Carbonite for the bulk of my days in Wrath and Cata. I don't know much about either of you personally, but I do recognize your right to move on from this game. I'm glad that you decided to release the code for this addon to the community so that those who enjoy it can continue using it to their benefit. I wish you luck in your careers.

Thanks as well to Rythal for taking up the flag as the "unofficial" (or is it actually official?) maintainer for future updates.

Yes thanks a lot guys, and thanks for doing this as you leave. Good luck out there :)

S@thi 10-01-12 02:12 PM

Thanks for everything you have done for the WoW Community using this amazing addon.
I'm glad to see Carbonite will live on in the near future.
Original authors: thanks for creating a amazing addon..
Carbonite has become a must have for me.. without it my WoW feels incomplete.

Rythal: I wish you good luck in updating / fixing the addon.
Also I wish you lots of positive spirits and energy.

Thanks gents!

Irene

Chmee 10-01-12 03:27 PM

I'd like to echo the thanks to Faatal and Haavok. They created an outstanding addon, one that many Wow players, including me, have found essential over the years. Now that other things are taking priority in their lives, passing the torch is the right thing to do. So thanks for your hard work in the past, and thanks for passing the torch, and thanks to Rythal for picking it up!

davie261 10-01-12 06:44 PM

I too thank you for all you have done for the WoW community, giving us one of the best addons ever and now passing it on to the community to keep it alive. Carbonite will live on and I will be donating to Rythal for his hard work in the future.

Gashara 10-02-12 07:23 AM

I would like to add my thanks as well. Not only for all you've done to increase the fun I have playing WoW, but also for not letting your wonderful creation die :)

faatal and Haavok: thank you can't be said enough. it's pretty obvious how we all feel about carbonite! the convenience factor alone is more than worth it. it's definitely one of the first add ons i update each patch/xpac. and thank you for allowing someone else to take the reigns and continue your work. it would make me, as well as many others, very very sad to have to go on without carbonite. i wish you well and God Bless you and yours. ><>

Rythal: thank you for stepping up and taking on this massive project. i was about to start searching for a hopefully halfway decent "replacement" for carbonite. but now that i know someone is working on an update i'm more than happy to wait. :D

MadmayNM 10-02-12 11:48 AM

Thanks for your great addon!

Thanks again for the great addon and all the work to make it so. I will miss this addon if it totally fades away.

Adamsdad 10-02-12 01:10 PM

Thanks for finally letting us know whats going on but I do have 1 question tho...I never "donated" but for the people that have "donated" reciently are you going to refund their money because you have decided not to update a product for which they have paid for? I'm sure there are players out there that are wondering the same thing.

to be honest, they could have just kept the code (and your money) and never looked back. IMO just be grateful that they let the code go so it could have a proper update. Of those of us that did "Donate" i dont consider it lost/stolen as i was still able to use it albeit a gimped version . Still well worth the money

Also Rythal is not the original author, he just took over after getting the source GPL'd. Faatal and Haavok have quit and passed the torch to another

Temptress 10-02-12 02:25 PM

Thank you

I want to thank Haavok and Fataal for all the time and effort they put into Carbonite, for releasing the code and allowing Rythal to carry on the project (we) the Wow community hold so dear. We wish you success in all future endeavors.

Rythal thank you for time and contributions to Carbonite; I'm not a programmer but you have my support.

Long live "Carbonite"

Sincerely
Temptress @ Feathermoon

I recently donated to the original authors and Rythal i don't consider it lost monies; I'm just thankful they allowed Rythal to continue the work.

Thank you for being honest about not being a donator. Those who donate have or should have done so with the knowledge that they aren't expecting anything (especially in the future), thus why it is a donation and not a paid subscription or paying for the addon. I myself was/am a donor to Carbonite and I shadow the feelings of others, no money lost/stolen and I donated with the intent to thank them for all their hard work they have put into the project previously.

You are a player (user sounds bad, but is the technical term) and there is nothing wrong with that and I am sure players are wondering about the same question. Donors, I'm not sure if they are wondering it - there certainly has been enough talk about it that they should all be aware of what the donation was.

Pennet 10-02-12 07:57 PM

I just want to add my thanks to Faatal and Haavok, both for the work they've done in the past, and for opening the source of this up. It was the right thing to do, from my standpoint. I was a donator in the distant past, and I can say without a doubt I got far, far more than my money's worth out of Carbonite over the years.

Thanks again.

shadow78 10-03-12 04:33 PM

Grats to Rythal.

any word if carbonite will be updated at curse also?

To Faatal and Haavok wish you guys the best of luck.
kind of sad to see you leave but it understandable.

OK... Great thanks to you guys for putting out THE BEST quest tracker I have found in the years since i started using it, 3-4 year at least (been playing since vanilla)

my question is where can I follow the work to be done on it web page or anything ?
again thank you sooo much for your efforts :)

I have a serious question to pose to the AUTHORS, and it is this. Would you guys be willing to partially release the license to allow others to continue updating the source code so that the addon can continue? I personally LOVE Carbonite. All the enhancements that this addon provides are invaluable in-game. From the quest tracking to the comprehensive map integration and function, this addon has it all. I would truly HATE to see this one go the way of the dodo. I would be interested in learning how to write the lua and various codes to keep this addon going. Please email me at [email protected]. Anything I can do to help keep this fantastic addon going....

Umm, no offence, but did you even read the first post of this thread? They have released the full code under the GPL(open source). Rythal is the new maintainer, and is even now working on updating it with his existing fixes. He and maybe others will continue to work on it.

wilki24 10-05-12 12:21 AM

As an early subscriber to Carbonite, I can't thank you all enough for making sure that this project lives on.

Very happy to see this news :-)

Bakur 10-05-12 01:03 AM

Thanks for a great addon guys. I don't think I could play WoW without it at this point. And thanks for releasing the code, we all appreciate your hard work.

jbennettsr 10-05-12 10:02 PM

Sorry to see you guys go. Carbonite been my favorite add-on, if you could only choose 1 carbonite would be the one. Good luck in whatever your new ventures may be, thanks for the time you have committed to this in past. Good luck to you both.:D

arkstone 10-05-12 11:14 PM

You guys created amazing addon and we, as whole community (I think I will say it from all carbonite users, as our thoughts in that regard most likely same), all thank you for your amazing job well done! Also we're really gratefull for releasing your source under GPL as we now have a chance to continue your amazing job. Personally I wish you good luck in all your endevours and again thank you!

Faatal and Haavok, I'm going to miss both of you. The masterful work you did in creating this Carbonite Addon has had such a wonderful impact on so many people's lives. Your efforts have contributed greatly to my own joy. No matter where you (and your families) go, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers! Thank you for for everything you've done, and I do hope that from time-to-time, you'll drop in and let us know how life is going for you. God bless.

just want to take a moment to thank you both, and all those that have worked on this addon over the years. i can attribute my 10 85's completely to your amazing addon, without it i never would have been able to accomplish that feat, not to mention the utility outside of questing. Its good to hear that you have passed the torch to let your legacy live on! Long live carbonite!

samatina 10-08-12 06:33 PM

Thank you SO much for making the best addon **ever** for the game. I know I appreciate all you've done over the years and I wish you two much success in your future. You will be missed.....

Leridyn 10-09-12 06:30 AM

Allow me to add my thanks to all of you for this wonderful addon. Carbonite is so important to many of us playing WoW, adding to our enjoyment of the game - many of us (me included) would be totally lost without this incredible addon. I certainly can't imagine playing WoW without it!

Faatal & Haavoc - thank you for creating and developing Carbonite. We can see it was a labor of love, and a true service to the WoW community. As a grown up IT professional myself, I know that life, family, work and such can get in the way. Heck, I've had to take time off of WoW myself to attend to more pressing issues, and I respect that you both have allowed others to take up where you both let off. You have the thanks of many more than just the people who have commented here. There are some very talented and ethical people here who I think will treat this code with the respect and love it deserves.

Rythal - you have remained respectful and classy throughout this whole experience and have deferred to the original authors in every way. They are lucky that you will be intrinsic to the next generation of development, as I believe you will continue to honor their efforts and hold true to the integrity of the project - you're just that kind of guy, from what I've read here and on other sites.

Thank you again, and I wish you all nothing but success and joy on your journeys. You have made many people and guilds incredibly happy and I look forward to the evolution of this great addon.

Best of luck to you guys with future endeavors!

Thanks again!
