I created a pull request for my changes on WatchList items, although I feel it's far from finished.
Just did some testing with it, there's still a problem when finishing an item quest during combat...

Watchlist items
Regarding the watch list, there's a small addon that circumvents UseQuestLogSpecialItem taint: http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/questitembuttonfix
It replaces the original ObjectiveTracker buttons...
