Cause indeed the 'looks' of the maps aren't very pretty. Specially when zoomed out.
That look doesn't fit Carbo at all imo.

Afaik you can only lock them in the options, not close them

Go to the options from Carbo, (rightclick the map >> options) go to 'Map Minimap'

There are options for the 'windows'. Maybe you see an option there.
Something like show window 1, show window 2.
