It sounds like you're a victim of the FPS leak bug in nUI5 that I'm trying to fix with nUI6.
Just for the sake of testing, try installing the nUI6 Alpha along with your existing nUI5 and see if it improves your frame rate or not. It will be interesting to know if the new design is addressing the FPS leak for you or not. (keep nUI5 enabled when you use the nUI6 alpha)
Also... generally, reducing the shadow detail level in your graphics settings helps a lot.
