Actually, no, that isn't precisely true. What about when you auto-follow someone?
There has been a lot of discussion about this mod in the Blizz UI forum, you can bet that the Blizz folks have seen it, given the number of threads there have been. At this point in time, they've neither "broken it" by removing the functionality that allows it, nor have they said that it constitutes a "bot". If/when either of those happen, it'll be removed from the site. But until Blizz says that it's a no-go ...
