I do love a well-timed "blink to the ground", but if you want to be safe, it's as simple as not waiting so long before using slow fall and making sure it's somewhere you can activate quickly. Remember, you can blink while slow falling if you think you're going over where you want to be. If you're low enough, you jump to the ground, if not, you stop horizontal movement and continue floating down.
