If it was why goto the extended lengths that they did .. why not just say that add-ons can in no way have actual advertising in them?? Donation/website links in a about box are fine but no ADS. Why add all the other stuff?
The ad version had only been out for a couple of weeks so I doubt very much it's a knee-jerk reaction to that. I bet lawyers have been formulating this thing for quite a while.

On a side note, I seriously doubt the ad version was ever expected to generate ad revenue. The only ad in there was an ad for the paid version. Basically it was "Here's the full version with some annoying popups", try it out and if you like it subscribe.
