Search engine indexing of sub domains

Consider the following google search, using a phrase from one of my upload descriptions:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22vi...ws+Explorer%22

For me, various wowinterface subdomains serving essentially the same page are the first four results, indicating that Google is blissfully unaware of WoWI's http://anything-is-a-subdomain-of.wowinterface.com/... addressing scheme. It would perhaps be better to prevent indexing of non-www subdomains or specify canonical URLs for pages where those make sense.

I vote this up due to having been frustrated by this phenomenon.
