Seerah is right. Make the UI for your own. If others like what you do it's a bonus but thats not what you should be looking for.

Actually the basic idea Kendian had was perfect (having vertical player health/mana bars) next to the actionbars, while target is above the actionbars.

This is perfect for symmetry and gives alot of room to play with.

Sth like this


That way you can even do some kind of Car interface.

I just don't like the debuffs RIGHT to the target frame. Dunno, I think that kills most of the symmetry of that part of the UI.

But except of that, it's quite nice, yes.

Symmetry is nothing one should aim for at all costs. There have been dozens of examples that show that symmetry is not needed for an awesome looking, yet very functional interface.

Form follows function. Not vice versa.

and ornament is crime? :P

It strikes me that symmetry could be a prime criterion of functionality from another viewpoint.

I dunno...personally I've spent far too many hours at times trying to squeeze functionality into some form that inspired the process.

Maybe for a another thread...

If you can not put the function you need in a form you want. The form is obsolete and you don't need to think further. No matter if the form inspired you or not - if you can't adept it: Stop trying to put the function in that form. Saves you wasted time that can be spent on thinking about a better form or at least at how to adept the form to follow the functionality.

And yeah, this might be better to discuss in another thread.

I'm not going to address that here for the reason stated above, but in short: 1 Nope and 2 Not necessarily. Just as minimalism is not the answer for everything and graphics can help to highlight function.

I'm not trying to make something up here. If you really think about it, the purpose of an interface is interaction which means functionality. So however you put it, you can and should always get back to "form follows function".


@Topic
The border around the minimap is a little faulty. *cough*
The power bar around the unit frames looks a little bit "unsharp", imo.

This was my original layout, which is like RothUI from the wrong side of the tracks, lol, and I love it, I guess I got caught up in too many choices. I ( Like being in a bookstore or library...you know what you want before you get there, but once inside, SOOOOOO many choices). My apologies for the deluge of 'which/how/should I/does this'. As always, C&C/suggestions are MOST welcome~

Seems perhaps it may be time for a reminder, so here it is. Anyone using this site is expected to follow the site rules. That includes:

1. Post with respect and courtesy. Debate is fine ... so long as when you disagree with someone, you respond in a civilized and constructive manner.

2. No libel. No defamation of character. Don't come here and slam/flame anyone/thing. Don't come here sounding off that Blizz sucks, EQ sucks, mod_author_01 sucks, etc and so on. None of that. If you're refering to the late debate about "Form follows function" then I find it very invigurating and educational. All what they both say is true, they are just following two different mind sets.
That of a designer, and that of an engineer.
One says that for it to function it needs a form.
Other says that as long as it function it has a form.

Imagine this:
One guy cant taste so he says, it's not an orange unless it's orange.
The other guy is blind, and he says it's not an orange unless it taste of orange.
They are both right, they just can't connect unless having an debate where they share their points of view/taste.

I never really got the point in downloading complete UIs...
My UIs are highly personal, because they are built to fit my very own needs...
I really think, style is important, but as a tank, everything have to be "in place" to make sure, I'm not overlooking anything.
But there should be some "eye-candy" aswell, as I have to look at the UI for some time^^.

So yeah, form follows function, but please, style it as far as possible!

New layout inspired by Dawns new rectangle minimap.



I'm at a loss at where to put my buffs (on the right side of the SS). Also I'm looking for a pixel font for AuraFrames, any suggestions?

Looks really good, but the font is not really readable :3

I guess http://www.wowinterface.com/download...PixelSkin.html or http://www.wowinterface.com/download...cade_Nefs.html for buff frames.
