BLP image atlas question

Hey folks!
Can't really tell if my question is more graphics or code related, sorry
I've seen many addons use BLP files that contain multiple images (e. g. arrows pointing in different directions).
But I can't find any examples of best practice on how to use a part of such atlas in Lua code.
Would highly appreciate any guidance on this matter, cheers!
