Yay! Silly post about a weird mod from some guy I can't understand has now degenerated into the Mac Vs. PC debate!

Bluspacecow posted a great post... can PC make a comeback? I'm breathless with anticipation!

That mod is a pretty good idea, but in most cases you would see someone coming online,
get a message and just realise that noone is there to demote him
or that the hacker is fast enough to clear the gbank
before the original owner even has a chance to login to kick the hacker out...

Most of those hackers use scripts to clear the gbank with one click,
clear your own bank with one click, send everything to their chars with one click
and sell everything else to the vendor or disenchant ir.

So I don't think they'd need more than 3-5 minutes to do all this at least with the main char,
which should in most cases be a short enough time to make it hard
to contact the owner, have him start his pc, start the game and login.

The only really safe way to not get hacked is the Authenticator imho,
as the common stupid user has nearly no chance to compromise that system
(unless you are stupid enough to give one of those numbers to a phising site
and the hacker is sitting with an open auth window at his pc just waiting for the data, which is highly unlikely).

Imho they should ship an authenticator with every expansion they sell and make it an requirement to use it.
This way they would safe massive ammounts of GM manpower
and the GMs might finally be able to help with ingame problems faster,
so that not feeled 80% of problems get "solved" in an ingame mail
becaue the player gave up waiting after some hours -.-

I love security posts like this..

A: Macs are just as prone to malware as a PC. The reason you dont see as many viruses for macs is that hackers target the largest demographic. (Pc's if you cant figure it out)

B: The comment about viruses not jumping up and saying "Hi, Im right here". Duh. There wouldnt be a need for real time scanning otherwise....

C: IE is better about security then it has been. But I will still take FF over it. Use Adblock and Noscript you will be VERY safe.

D: For the love of all thats Holy, get a damn AV program and USE IT! You should have a minimum of 2 security programs. One AV and one designed to target malware/spyware. Scan at least once a week with both.

E: **** sites=BAD!!!

F: If you use Windows, download the updates!! I dont know how many comps I have seen infected and never installed a single damn MS update.

Live by this, and you will find a hack free life....

Be absolutely sure you update and scan every day. Not once a week.

That's only necessary if you're such a lazy user that you can't exercise a little attention to detail and get to know your system. And even if you are that lazy, bear in mind that AV software and malware/spyware scanners don't always stop that stuff from coming in, and they certainly aren't going to correct any lazy-user mistakes you might make. All they'll do at that point is let you know that it came in.

Preventative maintenance through exercising the tips I gave is the best way to get it done. I'm not knocking good AV software. If that's your gig, fine. Hackers still find ways around it, and if you want to be sure you aren't getting it, my tips are the way to go.

Good advice, instead of locking my door at night I prefer to leave it wide open to allow any person wandering by access to all my belongings as everyone knows robbers can get around the door using the window, so all you peasants who decide to lock your doors are just wasting your time.

All they'll do at that point is let you know that it came in.
What AV software have you been using? ZoneAlarm tells me whenever I'm doing something funky.

but since I adopted all those practices five years ago, I haven't had a single problem. If you like my results, do what I do.
You kind of sound like those lose weight fast adverts :P.

They always do because someone along the line in these discussions makes a completely unfounded claim about this over that and then all the computer experts jump in.

The simple summation of all this:

Don't be an idiot on the web and protect your computer regardless of the OS it uses.

Actually, locking your door would be preventative maintenance, so to that end, all of my tips would be locking the door. AV software and the like would be like keeping an alarm on the door and a loaded weapon of some kind next to your pillow. Those are both far more effective after you haven't locked your door, no? Not following my tips makes the alarm and weapon so much more necessary, where as having the appropriate locks on the door make the weapon and the alarm entirely unnecessary.

See what I did there? Thanks for handing me all the tools for an adequate analogy.

Again, I'm not knocking software. I'm just saying that paying attention to things yourself and remembering that software won't do everything for you really is the more efficient way to go. I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive, but if they must, pay attention to your stuff and get rid of the software.

I'm sorry...what were you saying? I haven't been paying attention, and my forum-grok software seems to be out of date...

Actually, my doctor diagnosed me with what he called an acute case of Torhal-induced cardiosis. I nearly died. I think I'm going to do the American thing and sue for damages.
