This solution worked for me as well... Great find. Been frustrating trying to get Minion updated.

On Vista 64 bit, if an application is 32bit it should be installed under "C:\Program Files (x86)", but I noticed that the Minion installs to "C:\Program Files\MMOUI Minion".
Could that be a source of those problems?

For me, I had to start a command prompt as administrator, then run the link from the desktop. This allowed it to update properly. It doesn't look like UAC is handled properly.

Even setting the working directory didn't work.

Edit: Forgot to mention this was on Windows 7 Ultimate.

The directories are a fictitious difference that Microsoft created. There's no difference between the two and a 32-bit program can just as easily access the Program Files directly the same.

What error did you receive?

Anyone with the CreateProcess error, could you please look in your event log (start->run, eventvwr.msc) and look in either the Application or System log for any error that seems to reference Minion or a program called InstallHelper? For an example, here is something sitting in my error log:

Code:
Faulting application name: InstallHelper-2902267585936604450.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4a902f8f
Faulting module name: InstallHelper-2902267585936604450.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4a902f8f
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00012b5f
Faulting process id: 0x15b4
Faulting application start time: 0x01ca23514c9e68c5
Faulting application path: C:\Users\MPDELB~1\AppData\Local\Temp\InstallHelper-2902267585936604450.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Users\MPDELB~1\AppData\Local\Temp\InstallHelper-2902267585936604450.exe
However, it might look completely different. Just look for InstallHelper or Minion somewhere within the timeframe during when you were trying to update.

Thanks for your patience guys; please keep in mind this is still a beta product and this area is one of the most difficult areas to get right, especially when you consider the wide variety of operating systems that this is running on.

Updated permissions for the User account, and that worked.

Why on earth would that be necessary?

Well if you elevate permissions yourself, then it doesn't have to spawn the process that takes care of UAC. So you're avoiding the problem, not fixing it.

Again, do you have anything in your event log?

Ok hopefully the problem is fixed now.

The problem was I uploaded the debug version of the application, but supplied the release version DLLs. The two don't match, so it wasn't very happy

Thanks for the event log trace. That was very helpful.

It is fixed for me now.
I do notice another issue, and I'll only mention it here because I'm currently writing this msg...
The applet interface disappears during updating. I have to minimize it and restore the applet in order for it to "redraw". Best I can describe it, and it's probably been mentioned elsewhere...
Running Win7 RC1 64bit with an ATi Radeon HD4770 if that makes any difference. Catalyst v 2009.0520.1631.27815 on a dual monitor setup.
If there is another topic on this already, please just point me there.
Thanks for fixing the UAC issue.
