Some messages missing

A couple of days after 4.2 was alive, an addon started blocking a lot of annoucements, like some yells from bosses, the horn warnings from Shannox, some warnings during the boss fights and so on. But I really can't find the source of it! Can someone give me an idea of which addon may be causing it? I went to chat settings and every filter is turned on, so I guess it's not a configuration.

Hi there. I've had the same problem too. It happens randomly and even with all addons disabled, so I think it's a bug in patch 4.2.

Would be nice if someone else could confirm this, too.

With the arrival of 4.0 many sounds changed and I think the way sounds are executed was updated. Correct me if I am wrong.

There was a glitch in Cata Beta with the sound system when multiple sounds were playing at once. Sounds would get out of sync and then stop for a while. Later, it would run through the entire sound queue at once when nothing was happening. They supposedly fixed that in the official 4.0.6 release. I know that was a long time ago, but it could have resurfaced. Some glitches do.

I haven't had it come up yet in the official client, but that might explain it.

I'm quite certain the OP isn't talking about sound, but chat messages, namely boss yells and boss ability warnings (the ones that produce a link to the ability used).

If it's chat, you could try making a temporary addon to check if the related events are even firing. My first guess would be to watch for the following events.

CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_EMOTE
CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_SAY
CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_WHISPER
CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_PARTY
CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_YELL
CHAT_MSG_RAID_BOSS_EMOTE
CHAT_MSG_RAID_BOSS_WHISPER

It may be a bit much, but this list should capture ANY chat message generated from an NPC.
This code would be an example of a way to debug these events.

Code:
local frame=CreateFrame("Frame");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_EMOTE");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_SAY");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_WHISPER");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_PARTY");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_YELL");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_RAID_BOSS_EMOTE");
frame:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_RAID_BOSS_WHISPER");
frame:SetScript("OnEvent",function(self,event) print(event); end);

Well, at least I know it's not only here that's happening it. But in the raid this week, I think I was the only one with this problem.

Will try to do something like this, but I think the problem lies more on yells and warnings. But gonna try to narrow it a little bit. But it sux to debug since you actually need to be inside a raid and fighting a boss... =/

Chances are the yells are fired through CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_YELL and warnings through CHAT_MSG_RAID_BOSS_EMOTE, but I included all NPC-generated chat events in case they go through something else. If you want to try other events, you can easily change the list.

You can also test it in dungeons if you like, it happens there too. That'll probably be easier than having to worry about it in raids.

I ran an event trace earlier when engaging a boss and I couldn't see any events firing for their opening yell (although the sound did play).

I'm still not 100% sure, but it seems it's related to BigWigs somehow. I disabled it and got some yells back. Need to test a little further to prove it.

This happens every patch. Blizz chat is fragile.

I'm also suspecting that sometimes, some CLEU/Combat events don't fire for other ppl in a group, while still firing for myself, or vice versa

I don't have hard evidence though, and only tested it with one of my own addons, together with someone else

Yeah, but this is strange. Usually when it's a Blizz's bug it happens with the majority of people. In my case, it seems it's only happening with me from my guild.

I also noticed this is happening in ZA/ZG also. Missing a lot of yells. Even the chat bubble is not appearing on top of the head of the yeller. Maybe it's a bug from LittleWigs? I dunno, totally lost here.

The chat bubbles are part of the 3D world under the UI system, so it seems the glitch is in the core game code and not the UI.

I made a ticket for this and got the crappy 'reset your interface' reply even though I pointed out that I already did so. Seems like we'll have to wait until they realise it.

They're actually part of the UI, they're simple positioned based on information from the WorldFrame.

They're a hybrid like the nameplates.
