Argh miniMap issues

Every time I think I have the maps options sussed, it turns out I am wrong.

Is there a decent writeup on what al the various options for the minimap do an how they interact? I am so tired of having black boxes appear in the minimap at weird times that I am close to separating the Carbonite map from the game minimap. I really don't want to have two maps on the screen though.
