Warning! New scam is in action.

Totalbiscuit from WoW Radio alerted his Twitter followers about a new scam email that is making the rounds.

Essentially it is purporting to be some kind of "survey" with a in-game pet as a reward. However the link redirects to a Russian site that is not related to World of Warcraft or Blizzard. The email itself is very well put together and looks legit.

Screenshot of the email (thanks to WoWRadio):

As always Blizzard well NEVER ask for your account details in any email or other communication. If you are ever in doubt, manually enter the URL for World of Warcraft (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com for the US or http://www.wow-europe.com for the EU) as Blizzard will link promotions and information from the WoW front page.

From WoWRadio:

1) Blizzard will NEVER ask you for your login details. Be extremely suspicious of any email that links straight to a login screen that may look like the official account management page but does not have the same URL.

2) If an email that appears to come from Blizzard comes to an email that is not registered with your World of Warcraft and Battle.net account, then it is not official. Delete it.

3) Website links in phishing emails may be masked to trick you into thinking they are official. Before clicking anything, be sure to hover over the link and check the address at the bottom of your browser, NOT what pops up in the box next to it, since that information can be spoofed.

No, doing so will only make things worse. More people will get caught by this scam, thinking they're going to get a real pet (as it would actually exist for them to get now), and... well, just no. It would only make things worse.

I never cared much for pets at all, in a non combat capacity, but if the Horde ever had a cat vendor that sold cats like in Cralor's avatar, I'd buy it.

That mmo champion database is a data mined database last time I checked with the developer.

As such it doesn't have any clues other then just the tooltip

Here's 2 better links that has comments on them

zomg sticky for this Please !!!!!!!!!!

With the coming beta tests for of Blizzard's products people who should know better might get caught by this.

Their argument would be "but it's a beta test of course it will have a different website address"

And they would then *ignore* the URL in the address bar and *ignore* that's it's possibly not a Blizzard website.

To be fair to them Blizzard has known to register domain names well ahead of time for beta tests which could trap several well meaning peoples.

So I present to you :

BLU'S GUIDE TO KNOWING WHAT THE F TO DO WHEN GETTING ZEE EMAIL ABOUT DEE BETA TESTS :

1) Open a browser to http://domaintools.com

2) Open a different browser window also to http://domaintools.com

3) Go to the first one and look up "us.battle.net" or "worldofwarcraft.com" in the big blue box in the middle of the screen !

4) Get the URL for where the email is wanting to send you. Copy that.

5) DPS as hard as you can !

6) Paste the URL from step 4 into the big blue box on that 2nd browser window. This would be the one you have open to domaintools.com. Watch the tail !!!

7) Ok so now you should have 2 windows open with a whois record in each.

A whois record will show who owns a domain name and who it is registered too. Domaintools.com is quite nice as it also has a lot of other information as well. Like the location of the servers from the IP address for example

8) Now we know Blizzard owns "battle.net" and "worldofwarcraft.com"

9) Compare the new URL to the one for battle.net and worldofwarcraft.com

10) If they do not match don't put in your username and password.

In fact be safe and do not put your username and password anywhere other then us.battle.net. Logging on the forums or logging on your account management page always takes you to us.battle.net

Woops almost forgot our European mateys. For you Euro/UK chaps replace us.battle.net with eu.battle.net . Similar story for the other locales. Regardless the whois record for eu.battle.net or us.battle.net will resolve to battle.net anyway.

/blushs at babbling

Erm... this has been reported to Blizzard via the CS forums right ?

5) Paste

On a side note, I approve of these scams. More scams == more morans getting hacked == less morans in WoW.

So they're the Scourge, then? Makes sense, considering they send mindless drones around to do their bidding.
