What does Monitor Zone do?

With the map open and right-cliking on the map to bring up context menu, I see a Monitor Zone menu item with tickbox. What does this option do?

It tells Carbonite to keep monitoring that zone's channel, telling you the location of other Carbonite users in that zone as well as any punks they detect.
