Random Thoughts - Patch 3.3

1) It's good the game is a step closer to being the complete product used in advertising over these past several months.

2) I'm pleased that the loading screen now properly scales with my display/driver settings. Not that it means much, but to have something finally work correctly made me think about weeping a bit.

3) Given the fact I can't get past the loading screen, well, I have no other thoughts.

Quest lines for epic weapons, grinding reputations, farming for mats, "end game raids" released right before the next expansion hits...ah yes, the game is familiar once again. My only anticipation at this point is whether or not people will stop visiting IC when they can power level their new dog boys. I'd guess yes.

I can't wait to get past the new loading screen to do stuff I've already done a few hundred other times. Such limited thinking in such an unlimited platform...things that make you go hmmmm.

Onward soldiers! We shall bust through this loading screen very soon! I promise!

Yeah, I also like how their own website is "offline for maintenance". That's bogus. We all know they're dodging flames over another lousy job of implementing a patch.

Some people are really spoiled. The rest of us remember the days of EQ, SWG, and others when new patches could mean days of outages.....

Ah, memories...

and yet some of us thought EQ sucked from day 1 and uninstalled it during the initial trial. Similar to how I feel about Aion, although unlike EQ, that piece has never seen any of my hard drives.

Nostalgia is no excuse for repeating your mistakes. I think even chimpanzees can eventually learn that circle pegs wont fit into square holes, etc. Know what I mean?

Since I keep getting kicked back to the login screen, I'm taking the time to watch the Cinematics again.

Takes you back to why you love Warcraft...

Wait...you guys are getting to a loading screen? You bastards...

The longest I've ever been "connected" to something and not be doing anything.

To be honest, I'm actually enjoying all the issues. It's an excellent excuse to ignore all the whiners and not have my UI/addons updated.

frustrating that the game client news window is empty/absent, and the web site is down. 5 years down the road, and some things still have not changed (i.e. unscheduled downtime, with the associated factual vacuum... for a "service provider" these are functionally equivalent to "newbie mistakes").

i will go do something else for a while... hey, i have an Ace3 port of Aloft to work on... yeah, that's the ticket!

Well they can spend their time fixing the problems, or telling people that things are broken, and they are working on it.

Myself I would rather they fix it, not talk about it.

And of course the forums are down, they don't need 5,000 posts saying the same thing over and over.

How many of you have worked in a Tech/Customer support when there was a major outage. You get tired of saying "Yes we know there is a problem, Yes they are working on it, No we don't know when it will be fixed."

Go watch the trailer:

You not only get tired of it, it's actually counter-productive. If I'm telling people what's wrong and how long it's going to be until it's back up, I'm not actually working on the problem.

Also, I think a lot of people tend to underestimate the sheer size of Blizzard and World of Warcraft from a technical standpoint. It's not a matter of one technician just turning in his chair and saying "it's down, be back up in about 287 minutes give or take a second". We're talking multi-tiered international managed hosting solutions on a massive scale, with probably 6-8 people between "phone jockey" and the actual "guy pressing the reset button". Hell, the BBC doesn't have anything that big.

However, I highly doubt that the forums are down because Blizzard can't handle the customer relations-side of things. It's most likely down due to the massive post-workday influx of American users all going there to ***** at the exact same time. Also, the initial outage was domain-wide...another indicator that it's not just Blizzard trying to "shut you up".

I agree on the web issues, the massive amout of people trying to post on the forums is sure to cause problems.
The same with the number of people trying to log in over and over and over and..................

I understand it. In fact, that's part of the reason I see the massive failure in their own policies/practices/methods of support. It is not the job of a customer to feel sympathy when a business is mismanaged. A business can set proper expectations whether it's a lemonade stand or an oil company. If the size of your business causes you to run it improperly, guess what? You aren't managing it right. Period. Difficult or not, that's a poor excuse for mediocrity, even in Obama's economy.

Cut out the personal attacks, everyone. Continued personal attacks will result in suspensions/bans.

Why did no one call me on the red phone? Time to try and fit in a H:TOC and some dailies before bed time.

We did not have the proper security clearance to get into the area where the red phone is.

We're still stuck filling the forms out to *request* access.
