What's the safest way to hide portraits

Some people have asked my addon to do this. But I never liked modifying the UI directly cause I don't want to cause taint. And what if another addon is already hiding the portrait and mine tries to show it.

Anyway is there a better way to do this besides just looking for the frame on /framestack then trying to hide it?
