replacing icons - everywhere ...

hi again.

been writing some questions on this forum the last few days and just came up with another one.

itīs like this, I got a few macros I use that i changed the icon for from the regular spell icon just because I like it better and it represent it visually better.

thing is that if I cast a, for example, DoT spell it show the standard blizzard spell icon. are there any way to get this to show the icon I have represented as a macro icon.

I would probably guess no, and that the spell icons are hardcoded in some way but maybe there is a slim chance anyway =)

If you know the name of the icon, then in your AddOns folder, create a folder called Icons. Drop the icon (rename the icon to the name of the icon you are overriding) you wish to use in that folder.

Many of the UI graphic elements can be overridden via the Interface folder.

ahh, nice ...

any easy way to extract the blizzard standard icons and/or find the name of the current icons?

I know some of the wikis got all icons listed but would be nice to get all icons exported so I can tweak the ones I want/need and just replace.

Why make it hard for yourself?
  1. Go on www.WoWHead.com
  2. Search for the spell/item icon you need
  3. Double click on the icon
  4. Copy the name it gives you
  5. Profit!

Oftentimes, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for until I see a name in the subdirectories of the Data directory. Also, the addon kit provides Blizzard's FrameXML and lua code as a reference, which you cannot get from WoWHead.

I use the UI kit myself. That is how I have found the Nameplate frame textures. Using that knowledge, I have been able to replace that frame with a custom one. The icon trick, I picked up years ago from a pack of icons that replace the various Druid spell icons with some new ones. I have used that "trick" to use custom icons for my macros. Too bad, I lost most of my custom icons a reformat or two back.

Also, you put the folder in your Interface folder, not your AddOns folder.

Arrgh!!! Idiot mistake, I meant to say "Interface", I have no idea why I said "AddOns". Then again I did post that first thing this morning BEFORE I had my coffee. Ya think I would have learned by now: no forum posting before the caffeine kicks in.
