Java does not always properly install itself.
  • Always, ALWAYS uninstall Java before installing it.
  • Check the environment variables after every install.
  • In XP: Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables
  • In Vista: Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> (continue through UAC if applicable) -> Advanced -> Environment Variables...
  • In System variables, check for JAVA_HOME - make sure it points to your current Java install and not your old one.
  • My current java install: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6
  • Firewalls and antiviruses are known to interfere with Java Web Start. Try temporarily disabling them; Web Start is only required for the install, you can turn them back on after the install.
  • UAC will not make a difference to Web Start, and I recommend leaving it on.
  • Force the minion web page to reload afterwards (usually hold down shift while clicking the reload button). Ignore if it says it doesn't detect Java.

Frankly, I'm not sure using the Web Start feature of Java was the greatest decision for Minion .

Exclamation Found a Solution.

If anyone is actually getting the splash:recv failed error message there is a workaround that worked for me on vista 64 bit.

go to the minion website and do NOT open the java application for the installer of minion, instead save it to your HDD or desktop and then create a shortcut on your desktop with this in the command line:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\javaws.exe "-Xnosplash"

Obviously show it where YOU installed java to but javaws.exe will be in the bin folder there.

you will also have to put in the full path of the minion file, for example mine was:

C:\Users\myaccountname\Desktop\minion.jnlp

so in the end the shourcut should look like this

E:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\javaws.exe "-Xnosplash" C:\Users\myaccountname\Desktop\minion.jnlp

Hopefully this should help with the splash problem.

I have also found out that Comodo Security software can mess around with webstart quite alot.

Hope this helps!!!!!!

My wife has a Vista64 install and Minion went on cleanly for her. So while the statement may true, it's not true in all cases.

Oh good ____ . . . .

YES. After a lot of experimentation, it *does* appear that Comodo is heavily interfering with Java stuff. Including my own development projects.

If you have Comodo, you'll want to check on trusted vendors/safe files every time you install Java as well .
