Broker (LDB)

Ya know Ive noticed this becoming bigger and bigger but I do not have the foggiest idea why?
Why is Broker for our addons becoming more common? What are the advantages if any? Is it safe to assume all authors will be going this?

Can someone please enlighten me or shoot me a link to more info?
