1) are docsnameplates the only ones that show buffs/debuffs?
2) do they all use a significant amount of memory?

No, other nameplates do as well. Tidy Plates: Neon, for example: http://www.wowinterface.com/download...latesNeon.html

There are also addons like PlateBuffs (not currently updated) that let you put debuffs on any nameplate: http://www.wowace.com/addons/platebuffs/

there is a "PlateBuffs Beta" available, with a couple of updates up on Curse (at least), on the main PlateBuffs page there, most recently on 2010/11/1. also appears to be up on WoWAce (as linked above). i am using it, seems to work fine.

that doesn't mean it will continue to be updated....
