debugging an addon

I was wondering if there is such a thing as a debugger for addons. There are a couple addons that I really love, but have been broken for some time. I was a programmer and am used to running a debugger to find the problems in my code. Is there something similar for addons?

Thank you for the pointers... Now I'm going to try and debug a couple of my favorite add-ons that have been broken for sometime.
